Flatbed Design & Construction

The Advanced Fabrication – Flatbed Construction course is a hands-on, project-based program designed to take students beyond basic welding and teach them how to plan, fabricate, assemble, and complete a real-world project from start to finish.

Students will work through the process of building a steel truck flatbed, developing the fabrication and problem-solving skills used every day in professional welding and fabrication shops.

This course emphasizes accuracy, layout, fit-up, welding quality, efficiency, and finished-product craftsmanship. Students will learn that professional fabrication is about more than making a good weld—it requires understanding how an entire project comes together.

Course instruction will include:

• Shop and fabrication safety

• Reading drawings and understanding dimensions

• Measuring, layout, and material calculations

• Material identification and selection

• Cutting, drilling, grinding, and material preparation

• Squaring and establishing proper dimensions

• Structural framing and crossmember layout

• Fit-up, clamping, and tack-welding procedures

• Controlling heat and weld distortion

• MIG and Flux Core welding applications

• Multi-pass and structural welding techniques

• Fabrication of headache racks, skirts, fenders, and related components

• Mounting and attachment considerations

• Introduction to lighting and accessory placement

• Grinding, cleanup, and surface preparation

• Quality control and final inspection

• Material usage, efficiency, and waste reduction

• Project planning and time management

Throughout the course, students will work as a fabrication team to take a flatbed from raw steel to a completed product, gaining experience with the same challenges they will encounter in a professional fabrication environment.

Students will be expected to measure accurately, follow specifications, solve problems, maintain quality standards, and work efficiently as part of a team.

This course is intended for students who already have a solid foundation in welding and are ready to apply those skills to real-world fabrication and construction.

By the end of the course, students won't just have practiced welding—they will have participated in building something from the ground up.
