GMAW – Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG)

The Introduction to Welding course is designed for individuals who want to learn the fundamentals of welding for home and farm projects, fabrication, or as the first step toward a career as a professional welder.

No previous welding experience is required.

Students will receive extensive hands-on training while learning the fundamentals of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG). The course introduces students to welding equipment, proper machine setup, welding variables, material preparation, joint design, and techniques used to produce quality welds.

Instruction will include:

• GMAW (MIG) welding equipment and operation

• Welding safety and proper PPE

• Machine setup and welding parameters

• Shielding gases and their applications

• Welding variables and their effect on weld quality

• Plate and structural steel welding

• Welding in multiple positions

• Joint preparation and fit-up

• Weld defects and troubleshooting

• Equipment malfunctions and basic troubleshooting

• Introduction to welding procedures and specifications

• Introduction to welder qualification and certification requirements

Students interested in entering the welding industry will also begin developing the skills and techniques necessary to progress toward code welding and welder qualification testing.
