FCAW & FCAW-G – Flux Cored Arc Welding

The Flux Core & Dual Shield Welding course is designed for students who want to develop the skills used in structural steel, construction, heavy fabrication, industrial welding, and other field applications.

This course focuses heavily on hands-on welding, code-quality workmanship, and preparation for welder qualification testing on plate and structural steel.

Students will receive training in both self-shielded Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and gas-shielded Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-G), commonly known as Dual Shield. Training emphasizes proper machine setup, electrode selection, welding parameters, joint preparation, and techniques for producing quality welds in multiple positions.

Course instruction will include:

• FCAW and FCAW-G welding processes

• Welding safety and proper PPE

• Welding machine setup and operation

• Self-shielded vs. gas-shielded flux core

• Wire and electrode selection

• Shielding gases and proper flow rates

• Welding parameters and variables

• Plate and structural steel welding

• Fillet and groove welds

• Welding in multiple positions

• Joint preparation, fit-up, and backing

• Weld defects and troubleshooting

• Visual inspection and weld quality

• Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)

• Welder qualification requirements

• Preparation for applicable code-based welder qualification testing

A major focus of this course is developing the consistency, technique, and workmanship expected of welders in structural and industrial environments.

Students will work toward producing welds that meet applicable acceptance criteria and will have the opportunity to prepare for welder qualification testing based on applicable industry codes and procedures.
