​SMAW & GTAW – Pipe Welding

The Advanced Pipe Welding course is designed for students who want to develop the specialized skills required for industrial, commercial, mechanical, pipeline, power generation, and other pipe welding applications.

This course focuses heavily on hands-on pipe welding, with an emphasis on open-groove pipe joints using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) processes.

Students will learn proper pipe preparation, fit-up, machine setup, electrode and filler-metal selection, and welding techniques used to produce quality welds in multiple positions.

Course instruction will include:

• Pipe welding safety and proper PPE

• SMAW (Stick) pipe welding

• GTAW (TIG) pipe welding

• Open-root groove welds

• Pipe preparation, beveling, and fit-up

• Root opening and land preparation

• Tack welding and alignment

• Electrode and filler-metal selection

• Welding parameters and machine setup

• Root, hot, fill, and cap passes

• Welding in multiple pipe positions

• 2G, 5G, and 6G pipe welding

• Combination-process pipe welding

• Weld defects and troubleshooting

• Visual inspection and weld quality

• Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)

• Introduction to applicable codes and acceptance criteria

• Preparation for pipe welder qualification testing

A major emphasis of this course is developing the consistency, control, and technique required to successfully weld open-root pipe in challenging positions.

As students progress, training will focus on 6G pipe welding, one of the most demanding positions used to evaluate a welder's ability to work around a fixed pipe in multiple welding positions.

Students will work toward developing the skills necessary to prepare for applicable pipe welder qualification testing and the demands of real-world industrial welding.

This course is intended for students who already have fundamental welding skills and are ready to take their training to the next level.
